Non-traditional vowels
Traditionally Gujarati vowels are only 12 as mentioned above. But like Marathi, the Gujarati language has also adopted two more vowels to similar to those in English words "cat" and "cot"
There is one more vowel in Gujarati which is ઋ(Ru). The pronunciation is similar (not exact) as “ru” in ruby;“roo” in “roof”. This vowel is not found much in words used in day-to-day conversation. Peculiar words imported from Sanskrit have it. Pronunciation of ઋ(Ru) is different in Hindi and Gujarati. In Hindi ઋ(Ru) is pronounced as રિ(ri). Where as in Gujarati sound is similar to રુ(ru). This is same as in Marathi so you can listen to sound clip from my Marathi teaching blog to understand pronunciation.

Waiting for mail.

Hi! Your blog has been really helpful. I'm half Gujarati but wasn't taught to speak it growing up so I'm trying to learn now. I'm wondering, what do you mean by small and capitol letters indicate different alphabets? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Yasmin,
DeleteThroughout this blog I have given Gujarati sentences in Roman script .... as there are more alphabets in Gujarati than Roman script; I had to reuse some of the alphabets. So small and capital letters are used to indicate different letters in Gujarati.
I would like more of your feedback. Can you please mail me at learnMarathifast@gmail.com.
Waiting for mail.
Thanks,
Kaushik
By alphabets do you mean letters/ characters? Are the pronunciations different for the letters that only differ by capitol or lowercase in Roman characters? Or are there two alphabets that are used in differing situations?
DeleteThanks
By alphabets I mean basic characters in Gujarati.
DeletePlease read this lesson and next lesson "Gujarati Barakhadi/Barakshari" again in detail. Also watch the videos in those lessons. It will clear your doubts.
If it doesn't please ask again.
Hi Kaushik I have a few suggestions for you. Please add play button besides every alphabet as it would be convenient to play it again and again if one finds some particular one difficult to understand
ReplyDeleteHi Basmati,
DeleteThanks for your suggestion. I will see if I can add it.
Meanwhile have you visited the YouTube video mentioned above ?

Thank you so much for this blog! It is almost impossible to find decent Gujarati learning material. It is very hard to find it with romanized words. Your blog is full of useful learning material, and provides both romanization and audio. Also, you have the best alphabet chart and pronunciations I've found. Most audios are not clear enough for me to understand the sounds correctly. Please don't stop adding to this wonderful blog. You are my only hope for learning this language so that I can communicate with my in-laws.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer,

Hey great blog, but isn't ૠ a vowel?
ReplyDeleteYes. It is. Forgot to mention here as very few commnlco used worda have it. Anyways, i will add description soon. Thanks for pointing out.
DeleteAre you learning Gujarati using my blog /videos?
Yes I am trying to learn here as I think it is the most comprehensive and easy to understand site I've seen on the language. There are not that many resources to begin with. I also agree with your entire learning approach to the language. I rather learn the script first. Learning random phrases never helps me learn a language to say whatever I want. So thank you so much for making this blog!
DeleteGreat Tony(i guess that's your name). Thanks a lot for appreciation.
