હ(h) is a consonant which is not generally added with other consonants. I mean, there are very few words in which હ(h) is first consonant and so to be pronounced half.

We can denote half sound of (h) by standard way of giving slanting line below (h) i.e. હ્‍

But there are few peculiar ways in which such combined sound is written traditionally
(h) + ય (y) = હ્ય (hy)
(h) +  (m) = હ્મ(hm)
(h) + ન (n) = હ્ન(hn)
(h) + ણ (N) = હ્ણ(hN)
(h) + ર (r) = હ્ર(hr)

e.g.
support -> સાહ્ય( sAhy )
external -> બાહ્ય(bAhy)
Brahman -> બ્રાહ્મણ ( brAhmaN )
A ritual  -> આહ્નિક(Ahnik )

  1. Hello Kaushik,

    I am an American Speech-Language Pathologist who will be working with a young child whose parents speak Gujarati and some English. In English the first speech sounds to emerge and be consistently used by the age of three are the
    /m/ as in “mama”
    /b/ as in “baby”
    “y” as in “you”
    /n/ as in “no”
    /w/ as in “we”
    /d/ as in “daddy”
    /p/ as in “pop”
    /h/ as in “hi”

    Are these sounds also used in Gujarati by very young children?

    Thank you for your help,
    Nicci

    1. Hi Nicole,
      It will depend on the surrounding where the child is raised. In Gujarati family, child will try to speak words like baa/maa(mother), bapu(father), dudh(milk), pani(water) and other sounds animals/birds in surrounding - dog,cat,sparrow, crow, cow etc.

      - Kaushik
