Present Continuous tense in Gujarati

We have already seen present tense of verb "To be" i.e  હોવું (“hovuM”) in Gujarati.

Extending this concept we will see sentences in present continuous tense

Structure is 
Doer of action
verb + (I)
Form of રહેવું
 (“rahevuM”)
Form of હોવું
 (“hovuM”) as in Present Tense
અમે (ame)
કરી (karI)
રહ્યાં(rahyAM)
છીએ(ChIe)

Forms of રહેવું (“rahevuM”) :- 
For Masculine Singular in any person :- રહ્યો  (rahyo)
For Masculine Plural in any person :- રહ્યા  (rahyA) 
For Feminine Singular in any person :- રહી  (rahI)
For Feminine plural in first and second person :- રહ્યાં  (rahyAM)
For Feminine plural in third person :- રહી  (rahI)
For Neuter Singular in any person :- રહ્યું  (rahyuM)
For Neuter plural or group of different genders :- રહ્યાં  (rahyAM)

Thus combining above forms and form of હોવું (“hovuM”) as in Present Tense, it can be summarized as follows :-

Examples :- 
(If a boy says) I am doing :- હું કરી રહ્યો છું(huM karI rahyo ChuM)
(If a girl says) I am doing :- હું કરી રહી છું(huM karI rahI ChuM)
(To a girl) You are laughing :- તું હસી રહી છે (tuM hasI rahI Che )
Tree is moving :- ઝાડ હલી રહ્યું છે ( jhAD halI rahyuM Che )
My teeth are moving :- મારાં દાંત હલી રહ્યાં છે ( mArAM dAMt halI rahyAM Che ) 
He(polite form) is coming :- તેઓ આવી રહ્યા છે ( teo AvI rahyA Che )

When third person plural indicates different genders, verb is created as per neuter plural.
Girls & boys all are coming ->  છોકરા અને છોકરીઓ બધાં આવી રહ્યાં છે  (ChokarA ane ChokarIo badhAM AvI rahyAM Che )

  1. Hi there, why do the verbs always end with an I even in masculine form and neuter forms. Examples: hum kari rahyo chum masculine form. Shouldn't it be "hum Karo rahyo chum"? And also the neuter plural maram damt hali rahyam che. Thanks

    1. Refer the sentence structure mentioned in the beginning of lesson above. It is always verb + ઈ(I)

      Delete
