There are three ways in which we use verb
"to remember"
1) Suppose a teacher meets his student
after many years and says "You are from batch of 1970, right? I remember
you."
2) A student living in a hostel writes
letter to his mother; "Whenever I eat food at canteen I remember dishes
you used to cook. I miss you."
3) A person helped you in your bad time. You
will say him;"Thank you friend. I will always remember your favour".
In all the sentence we have used verb
remember; but there is subtle difference in every use.
In first sentence you say you have not
forgotten something.
In second case you say one event triggers or
brings back memory of some other event.
In third sentence you explicitly assure
of keeping something in mind.
The noun remembrance is “યાદ”(yAd) in
Gujarati. So for these three ways, three different phrases are used viz. યાદ હોવું (yAd hovuM),
યાદ આવવું (yAd AvavuM ), યાદ રાખવું ( yAd
rAkhavuM)
Case 1) In English we
say
I remember you.
She remembers me.
Here verb "remember" is formed according to subject/doer of
action. But in Gujarati verb form “યાદ હોવું(yAd hovuM)” is formed as per
object.
And the subject is used with preposition "To"
So this is exact opposite of English.
Subject in English sentence.
With preposition “To”

Verb form of
યાદ હોવું(yAd hovuM)
As per object
|
I
મને (mane)
|
You
તું (tuM)
|
remember
યાદ છે (yAd
Che)
|
You
તને (tane)
|
Me
હું (huM)
|
remember
યાદ છું (yAd
ChuM)
|
Examples :-
I remember you :- મને તું યાદ છે (mane tuM
yAd Che )
I remembered you(boy) :- મને તું યાદ હતો (mane tuM
yAd hato)
I remembered you(girl) :- મને તું યાદ હતી
(mane tuM yAd hatI)
You remember me
:- તને હું યાદ છું (tane huM yAd ChuM)
We remember Mary :- અમને મેરી યાદ
છે (amane merI
yAd Che)
Mary remembers us :- મેરીને અમે યાદ
છીએ (merIne ame
yAd ChIe)
Case 2)
In second case you say one event triggers or
brings back memory of some other event.
In Gujarati we use phrase યાદ આવવું (yAd AvavuM)
યાદ (yAd)
means remembrance. It is feminine-singular noun.
We use form of noun or pronoun to
indicate possession i.e મારી, તારી, એની, કૌશિકની etc. As યાદ (yAd) is feminine-singular we use
only feminine-singular form indicating possession.
For more details of these forms refer
Similarly form of verb આવવું (AvavuM) is also feminine-singular.
So English sentence "I remember
you" is said in Gujarati as if saying "Your remembrance come to
me" :)
Examples :-
I remember you
:- મને તારી યાદ આવે છે (mane tArI yAd Ave Che)
You remember me
:- તને મારી યાદ આવે છે (tane mArI yAd Ave Che)
We remember Kaushik
:- અમને કૌશિકની યાદ આવે છે (amane kaushikanI yAd Ave Che)
Kaushik remembers us
:- કૌશિકને અમારી યાદ આવે છે (kaushikane amArI yAd Ave Che)
In past tense we can form similar sentences.
Kaushik remembered us:-
કૌશિકને અમારી યાદ આવી (kaushikane amArI yAd AvI)
Kaushik will remember us:-
કૌશિકને અમારી યાદ આવશે (kaushikane amArI yAd Avashe)
This is the way you
say in Gujarati sentences like "I miss..","He missed .."
Peter misses his friends :- પીટરને એના મિત્રોની યાદ આવે છે (pITarane enA mitronI
yAd Ave Che)
She missed her
mother a lot:- એને એની માની બહુ યાદ આવી (ene enI mAnI bahu yAd AvI)
Case 3)
In third case
you explicitly assure of keeping something in mind.
Here in Gujarati we
use phrase યાદ રાખવું(yAd rAkhavuM) which is as good as saying "to keep in
mind".
Verb form of રાખવું (rAkhavuM) is created as per pertaining rule for that tense.
Examples :-
I will remember your
favour/ I will keep in mind your favour :-
હું તમારો ઉપકાર યાદ રાખીશ (huM tamAro upakAr yAd rAkhIsh)
He always remembered
my advice / He always kept in mind my advice :-
તેણે મારી સલાહ હંમેશા યાદ રાખી (teNe
mArI salAh haMmeshA yAd rAkhI)
